The German gear manufacturer SEW has boosted its local capability with the opening of a new modern and efficient 26 000 m2 assembly and manufacturing facility in Johannesburg South Aeroton. The expansion of the company’s modular drive concept includes assembly of industrial gear (IG) units and industrial drives to better service critical local applications and harsh conditions with improved lead times. The company is also expanding its central warehousing and repair facilities to improve stock holding and service availability.
SEW’s helical-bevel gear units are high efficiency angular gear drives that provide energy savings over the entire operating range with a high degree of wear resistance and maintenance-free operation. These helical-bevel gears are available in a wide variety of torque offerings and reduction ratios to suit any application. The gear unit is a highly compact, high-torque drive and can be directly coupled with AC asynchronous motors and servomotors, making them ideal for applications requiring a small footprint and low total weight.
A large amount of flexibility is provided by a wide selection of options for the foot- and flange-mounted gear unit, including solid or hollow shafts. A key feature is the ability to power machines without a gear reducer by simply mounting a VARIBLOC(r) or VARIMOT(r) variable speed drive above the gear unit, allowing speeds to be adjusted either mechanically using a handwheel or electromechanically via a servo motor.
In the market for heavy-duty industrial gears, Europe still dominates the segment with Flender and Nord both claiming double-digit market shares. However, the emergence of Chinese suppliers into international markets is notable with Chongqing and Taixing gearbox manufacturers starting to make waves at tradeshows prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eurodrive are compact, lightweight solutions for a wide range of systems. Their reduction ratios and torque offerings are tailored to each individual application and designed for maximum efficiency. The helical-bevel design provides excellent efficiency in both directions of rotation and is ideal for applications with axial or moderate radial loads.
Helical-worm gear reducers by SEW Eurodrive are suitable for printing and packaging machinery, three-dimensional garage equipment, environmental protection machinery, transportation equipment and road construction equipment. The helical/worm combination is more efficient than a typical helicoidal gear unit and offers an array of torque options to meet any application.
These helicoidal gear reducers can be combined with the VARIBLOC(r) and VARIMOT(r) variable speed drives for increased power density and higher output torques. The gears are made from forged steel and the surface is hardened by carburizing, with precision machining ensuring the perfect parallelism of the shafts. The gears are mounted in a high-quality cast iron housing and can be mounted in a horizontal or flange combination installation mode. The helix gears and worm are lubricated with an oil-filled gear pump that can be supplied in various sizes to meet any requirement.
